Family Photography In Oxford.

Picnic Mini Shoots have launched, 3rd August 2024 at Wallingford Castle Gardens!

I've been wanting to do more picnic styles shoots, since I photographed Jack And Chloe's Engagement shoot last year (photos at the end.)

So I ran a giveaway on facebook and instagram. With the plan to find a family who is happy to have a free photoshoot in exchange for dressing on theme, and baring with me, while I tried out a new set up.

Sophie, Tom and their boys, who won my photoshoot giveaway and I'm so thankful to them. Sophie and her family were effectively my guinea pigs. It was amazing to see my vision come to life and I'm so pleased with how the photos turned out, it went even better than I imagined.

Since moving here 2 years ago I have found so many great locations for family photography in Oxford, but Wallingford Castle Gardens might be my favourite yet!

The Photos!

We started off with Mum, Dad and the kids sitting together on the picnic blanket to get some lovely family photos. Pleases note that, in order to give the children some privacy online, I will not be using their names throughout this blog post.

Children of their age often lose focus quite quickly and struggle to stay still for the more posed shots so i always start with photos of the whole family.

Then, as the boys started to lose their concentration, we played some games, where they could run around and have fun, while I snapped away.

Next we set up the blanket again, this time in the shade, as it was getting pretty hot.

We asked the boys to sit together and made jokes (about smelly bums and poo) to get some lovely natural smiles. If it works, it works!!

When it comes to family photoshoots, they are always going to be a bit chaotic, my goal is to embrace the chaos, so the kids have fun and the parents can feel relaxed.

A good tactic to keep kids happy is to bring some sweets for some gentle bribery. These two were also promised an ice lolly after their session.

I picked up this rocking horse from somebody on Facebook, a few months ago and I'm so pleased I did, because it was the perfect new activity when the smaller child was getting frustrated, and we got some really cute photos!

Sophie's family photos look really cohesive, because of the outfits they are wearing. If you'd like to achieve a similar look for your family shoot in Oxford, go for complimentary colours and earthy tones, avoiding really dark colours like black and navy blue.

Thanks again, to Sophie and her family, it was lovely to meet you all!
